Premium visual update for a classic RTS

Commandos 3 - HD Remaster is a paid action game from Raylight Games and Kalypso Media. In this HD remaster of the classic real-time strategy (RTS) experience, you get to revisit the battlefields of Europe across different parts of World War II. Aside from the visual overhaul, it also makes some updates to the controls and interfaces for the modern player.

Similar to its 2005 counterpart, Commandos 3: Destination Berlin, this visually upgraded version lets you control a group of Commandos on daring missions. Relive the WWII-themed campaigns or try another game in the franchise, such as Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines.

Use stealth and strategy

In terms of story and content, Commandos 3 - HD Remaster closely resembles that of its 2005 base version. You lead a team of six specialists—the Green Beret, Sniper, Diver, Spy, Sapper, and Thief—across three campaigns. After a Basic and Advanced training program, you can play the missions set on the Battle of Stalingrad, the European Theater, and the Normandy Landings for a total of 12 missions.

The game also retains the point-and-click approach. In your single-player campaign, you can see the entire map. This gives you the opportunity to survey enemy behavior and implement plans to proceed with your mission. A feature in Commandos 3, which is absent in previous entries, is the “cover mode.” It lets you assign a Commando to guard a door and ambush oncoming enemies.

The game is a bit short, but there are other difficulty levels that will test your tactics as well as secret areas unlockable only by performing specific tasks. In this HD remaster, though, the controls and the user interface are also improved on top of the graphics and animation. Players can also find renewed interest in the same remastered treatment for the multiplayer mode for up to eight players.

Commandos for the modern audience

The improved level of detail, the added convenience of the revamped controls and UI, and the retention of the original storyline all make Commandos 3 - HD Remaster a good military RTS for modern players. It doesn’t add new content in terms of story or campaign, but it still manages to highlight the features that once made the original Commandos 3 standout.
